Tidinit Instrument Showcases Tindouf’s Rich Hassaniya Culture
The Tidinit is an ancient four-stringed musical instrument deeply rooted in the Beidan community, a Hassaniya-speaking group found in Algeria's Tindouf region, Western Sahara, and Mauritania. This instrument is crafted from a hollowed, oval-shaped piece of 'adras' tree trunk, covered with camel or cowhide, and traditionally strung with horsehair from tails. Its design incorporates small pegs to secure the hide and features chains beneath the strings to amplify its unique sound, connecting the performer closely to desert traditions and authentic Hassaniya heritage.
The Tidinit instrument holds significant cultural importance, deeply intertwined with the Hassaniya culture prevalent among the inhabitants of Tindouf. Its distinct sound is a defining feature of local art, fostering the emergence of Hassaniya cultural figures dedicated to its practice. Among these is artist Mahfoud Othman, who began learning the instrument from Hassaniya art masters in the region in 2007, having previously explored piano. Othman has performed at various cultural and artistic events for Hassaniya literature, including in Western Sahara and Mauritania, showcasing the instrument's regional reach and shared heritage.
Specialized craftsmen, such as Kabous Salem, play a crucial role in perpetuating the Tidinit's legacy by producing instruments that maintain traditional specifications, mirroring those found in Mauritania and among Sahrawis. Salem notes that this production facilitates local artists, particularly Hassaniya cultural associations in Tindouf, in learning to play the instrument. Abdullah Lebouiz, a member of the Global Union of Hassaniya Writers in Tindouf, highlights that the Tidinit completes the mosaic of Hassaniya popular heritage, integrating with poetry and folklore to create social harmony, often performed alongside drums. Local musical associations are vital in preserving and developing the art of Tidinit playing, particularly during celebrations and festivals, underscoring its enduring role in Algerian cultural life. The instrument shares similarities with the Gumbri, popular in Algeria's southwest.
