Sonatrach, Sonelgaz Expand African Energy Infrastructure
Algeria is solidifying its position as an essential energy player across Africa and Europe, serving as a significant driver for regional and continental energy security. The nation continues to reinforce its presence through various projects encompassing oil, gas, electricity, and energy infrastructure, complemented by engineering and knowledge transfer initiatives. This strategic expansion aims to support African countries in strengthening their energy security while maintaining crucial supply lines to European partners.
In the hydrocarbons sector, Sonatrach is actively developing partnerships for exploration and production, sharing its expertise, and strengthening its presence in multiple African nations. Demonstrating this commitment, Sonatrach recently initiated its first deliveries of Jet A1 fuel from the Adrar refinery to the Nigerian market, affirming its interest in direct collaboration with African oil and gas companies. Furthermore, Algeria is engaged in the construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), a strategic project connecting it to Nigeria and Niger. Launched last June for its Algerian section, the 4,130 km pipeline, with a capacity of 30 billion cubic meters, is designed to enhance gas exchanges, bolster African energy integration, and facilitate the export of Nigerian gas to Europe via Algeria.
Beyond hydrocarbons, Algeria, through Sonelgaz, is instrumental in developing electricity infrastructure. The company has constructed power plants and supports the expansion of transport and distribution networks, exemplified by the donation of a 40-megawatt power plant to Niger and another to Chad, both fully financed by Algeria. Sonelgaz also provides training to African engineers and technicians, aiding partners in developing their energy competencies. For Europe, Algeria maintains its status as a reliable energy supplier, providing gas to Spain via Medgaz and Italy through TransMed. Recent steps include Sonatrach's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivery to Germany in July 2026 and a contract with Germany's VNG to increase gas deliveries from January 2027. Algeria is also collaborating with European partners on green hydrogen production and export projects, including the SoutH2 Corridor initiative.
