WAFCON Bronze for Algerian Women, 2027 World Cup Qualification

The Algerian women's national football team has made history by clinching the bronze medal at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and, for the first time ever, securing qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 in Brazil. This landmark achievement came after a hard-fought victory against tournament hosts Morocco in the third-place playoff, which concluded with a 3-2 penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The match saw Morocco initially take the lead in the 37th minute. However, the Algerian team demonstrated remarkable resilience, with Lina Boussaha equalizing in the 83rd minute, a goal that earned her the best player of the match award. The intense encounter also featured a penalty awarded to Morocco in the 90+7th minute, which was subsequently missed. The game then proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N'Gazi played a pivotal role by saving two penalties, ultimately securing Algeria's triumph.

This dual success marks a significant milestone for Algerian women's football, elevating the team to a podium finish at the continental championship and earning them a coveted spot on the global stage. The qualification for the 2027 World Cup represents a new chapter, highlighting the growing strength and determination of Algerian athletes in international competition. The team's historic performance underscores a period of notable achievement and future promise for the sport in Algeria.
