Algerian Women’s Team Honored for WAFCON Bronze

Algeria's women's national football team is scheduled to receive its bronze medals today, Sunday, recognizing their historic third-place finish in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This achievement marks the first time Algeria has secured the third position in the tournament's history and has also ensured their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The official ceremony is set to take place at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, where the players and technical staff will be honored following the WAFCON final.

The national team secured the bronze medal after a compelling match against host nation Morocco. The game concluded with a 1-1 draw in regular time before Algeria triumphed 3-2 in a decisive penalty shootout. Midfielder Lina Boussaha notably scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute, with an assist from Sofia Bekhaled, turning the tide after Morocco had taken an early lead. The Algerian squad, under coach Farid Benstiti, demonstrated resilience and strategic play to achieve this significant victory.

This award ceremony culminates an exceptional campaign for the Algerian women's team, which reached the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time. Their remarkable performance, securing both a historic medal and a place in the upcoming Women's World Cup, underscores a significant progression for women's football in Algeria. The team returns home having achieved a landmark accomplishment, establishing a new benchmark for national sporting success.
