Bank of Algeria Promotes Local Product Consumer Credit

The Bank of Algeria issued a directive on August 10, 2026, to banks and financial institutions, outlining a framework for developing consumer credit offers. This measure specifically aims to broaden household access to financing for goods produced or assembled within Algeria. The directive supports the national industry by channeling consumer demand towards local manufacturers, thereby contributing to the broader economic objective of strengthening domestic production capabilities.
The financing scheme is exclusively reserved for items manufactured or assembled by Algerian-registered companies, aligning monetary policy with industrial support. This approach is designed to stimulate local production by creating market opportunities for manufacturers. Enhanced sales can improve stock rotation, support existing production capacities, and encourage businesses to invest in further development. Products such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and televisions, which represent significant household expenditures, are key beneficiaries of this credit.
For households, access to credit transforms deferred demand into immediate purchases, enabling the swift acquisition of essential appliances. The Credit Populaire d'Algérie, for instance, offers financing covering up to 90% of a good's price, capped at 700,000 dinars, with repayment periods ranging from six to 36 months, provided the monthly payment does not exceed 30% of net monthly income. By facilitating such purchases, the initiative aims to protect households from costly informal financing options while promoting a disciplined budgetary approach. The success of this system relies on a balance between making financing accessible and protecting households from over-indebtedness.
