Sudan Prime Minister Announces Dialogue Amidst Algeria-Led AU Engagement

Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the upcoming commencement of a national dialogue aimed at reconciliation, constitutional reconstruction, and eventual free elections. This significant development occurred during a meeting in Khartoum with an African Union Peace and Security Council delegation. The delegation was notably led by Mohamed Khaled of Algeria, underscoring Algeria's active diplomatic engagement within the African Union's efforts to foster stability in Sudan.

Prime Minister Idris stated that the dialogue would be “owned by all the people of Sudan,” paving the way for “comprehensive national recovery, full national reconciliation and integrated constitutional reconstruction.” He emphasized that this process would culminate in “free and fair elections” enabling the Sudanese people to choose their new leadership. The Prime Minister also outlined a Sudanese government peace initiative previously submitted to the UN Security Council, which calls for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to withdraw from controlled areas and undergo integration and demobilization procedures.

During the meeting, Mohamed Khaled affirmed the African Union’s solidarity with Sudan and its people, according to the official SUNA news agency. He reiterated the AU Peace and Security Council’s commitment to fundamental principles, including sovereignty, territorial unity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of member states. This announcement of a Sudanese-led inclusive dialogue follows an earlier decision by Sudan's Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan to provide logistical, legal, political, and security guarantees for the process.
