Benin Forum Hosts Algerian Delegation’s Active Role in Global Debates
The 17th World Social Forum (WSF) concluded its activities in Cotonou, Benin, from August 4 to 8, 2026. The forum, held in Africa for the fourth time, served as a platform for discussing its historical ties to colonialism and its current economic and political landscape. Algeria's delegation marked a notable presence, aiming to reinforce the nation's youth and civilian diplomatic engagement on the global stage.
An Algerian representative, serving as the head of the Zahrat Al-Hayat Association for the Promotion of Cultural Activities under the Ministry of Youth, actively contributed to various thematic discussions. These contributions encompassed critical issues such as social justice, human rights, democracy, community participation, sustainable development, and climate justice. The delegation also engaged in dialogues concerning youth and women's empowerment, African challenges, and fostering solidarity and cooperation among peoples and civil societies. The forum's overarching theme, "Natural Resource Governance and Current Challenges in Facing Global Crises: Towards Peace, Stability, and Sustainable Development," guided these exchanges.
Beyond its active participation in debates, the forum also hosted a dedicated "Algeria Day." This cultural event served to introduce and celebrate Algeria's rich cultural and civilizational heritage to an international audience. Attendees were presented with traditional Algerian attire, including specific examples from Chlef, along with Algerian sweets, dates, and performances of Algerian music and folk arts. Symbolic gifts were distributed to visitors, further enhancing the cultural exchange.
The Algerian delegation's initiative and representation received comprehensive support and encouragement from several national institutions. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, Chlef Governorate, the Directorate of Youth and Sports, the Office of Youth Institutions, and the Martyr Al-Ghulam Muhammad Scientific Entertainment Center all contributed to overseeing and promoting this significant international engagement.
