Environment Ministry Develops Climate Early Warning Platform

Algeria's Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life, in coordination with the High Commission for Digitization, is actively developing a national digital platform for early warning and monitoring climate change. This initiative, highlighted by Minister Kaouther Krikou, is designed to strengthen the country's capabilities in predicting and overseeing climate and environmental risks. The platform aims to transition from a reactive approach, where intervention occurs after disasters, to a proactive strategy emphasizing anticipation and prevention, particularly as manifestations of climate change intensify across the Mediterranean basin, including Algeria.
The developing platform functions as a smart alert system, collecting and processing climate and environmental data from various sectors to provide an accurate picture of potential risks. It classifies alerts based on their severity and directs them to relevant authorities in a timely manner, facilitating preventive and proactive measures before situations escalate. This digital endeavor aligns with Algeria's broader commitment to combating climate change, as evidenced by its National Adaptation Plan. This plan focuses on diagnosing the climatic reality, proposing necessary mitigation measures, enhancing national resilience, and accelerating the transition towards a green, low-carbon economy.
Minister Krikou presided over a training day in Algiers dedicated to climate change challenges, which saw the participation of environmental directors, experts, academics, and representatives from national and UN organizations. The event served as part of Algeria's preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31). During this gathering, the UN Resident Coordinator in Algeria, Safina Claudia Amassari, commended Algeria's significant efforts in environmental protection and its dedication to confronting and adapting to climate change, both through national policies and coordination with international bodies. She also acknowledged Algeria's advancements in seawater desalination and the growing contribution of innovative startups in providing solutions to emerging climate phenomena.
