African Union Convenes in Algiers for Court Statute Review

The African Union (AU) is set to convene a technical meeting in Algiers, Algeria, from August 17 to 21, 2026. The focus of this gathering will be to discuss proposed amendments to the statutes governing the African Administrative Court. This important continental event aims to facilitate a crucial review process that has not occurred since the court's statutes were initially adopted in 1966.
Experts, along with representatives from member states of the Specialized Technical Committee for Justice and Legal Affairs, and delegates from the African Union Commission, will participate in the discussions. The proposed revisions to the Administrative Court's basic law are an integral component of a broader institutional reform program. This initiative seeks to adapt the judicial body to the significant developments witnessed within the continental organization over recent decades, thereby enhancing justice and legal protection mechanisms across all African Union institutions.
Algeria's selection as the host for this important continental meeting highlights the trust it enjoys within the African Union's institutions. The Algerian state further demonstrates its commitment by providing suitable conditions and necessary facilities through various ministries and relevant bodies, ensuring the successful execution of such critical regional events. This hosting role reaffirms Algeria's standing as a key contributor to continental legal and institutional development.
