Sahrawi Self-Determination Backed by African Trade Union Body in Algeria

The African Trade Union Unity Organization (ATUO) has renewed its steadfast solidarity with the Sahrawi people, firmly supporting their legitimate struggle for self-determination and independence. This significant reaffirmation was made in Algeria during the conclusion of the 14th edition of the Summer University for Executives of the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic. Hosted at M’hamed Bougara University in Boumerdes province, the university focused on the theme: “Self-Determination and Independence: An Inalienable Right.”

ATUO emphasized that the legitimate rights of peoples, particularly the right to freedom and self-determination, are enduring and cannot be diminished by time, political maneuvering, or bargaining. The organization expressed its pride in the Sahrawi people’s resilience and their ongoing commitment to their national rights, reiterating its support for the exercise of their undeniable right to self-determination and independence. This stance aligns with United Nations resolutions and the foundational principles and provisions of the African Union.

Furthermore, ATUO highlighted that investing in the training and capacity development of activists is crucial for strengthening a people's ability to defend their rights and contributes to building robust institutions that champion freedom and justice. The organization pointed to the historical experiences of African peoples in overcoming colonialism, asserting that legitimate rights persist regardless of the duration of an occupation, and that the will of peoples remains more powerful than attempts to impose a fait accompli. ATUO also affirmed that the Sahrawi people are not isolated in their quest for freedom and dignity, acknowledging the continuous solidarity from trade unions, workers’ movements, democratic forces, and free individuals worldwide. The organization concluded that any pressures or hardships encountered will only intensify the determination of peoples to pursue their aspirations for freedom, dignity, and independence.
