Italian Firms Partner Algeria for Farm Technology

Algeria is accelerating its pursuit of food sovereignty, with a significant opportunity for agricultural modernization emerging through an upcoming partnership with Italy. An important delegation of approximately fifteen Italian companies, specializing in agricultural machinery, is scheduled to visit Algiers on September 28 and 29, 2026. This mission, organized by the Italian Foreign Trade Agency (ICE) in collaboration with FederUnacoma, aims to foster strong connections between Italian operators and Algerian public and private sector decision-makers. The primary objective is to channel investments into technologies capable of increasing agricultural yields and sustainably structuring the agricultural value chain.

The two-day event in Algiers will feature a combination of institutional sessions and direct field visits. The agenda for September 28 includes an introductory workshop followed by business-to-business (B2B) meetings. On September 29, the Italian delegation will visit farms in the Algiers region to gain firsthand understanding of local agricultural realities. To ensure effective communication, simultaneous translation services will be provided in French, Italian, and English. This strategic collaboration underscores Algeria's commitment to overcoming structural delays within its agricultural model, particularly given that approximately 70% of its farming activities currently rely on traditional methods.

The selection of Algeria for this technological mission is deliberate, recognizing agriculture's role as a cornerstone of the national economy outside hydrocarbons, contributing around 15% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and covering over 8.6 million hectares of useful agricultural land. Key national priorities include enhancing water management and improving the yields of strategic crops, such as cereals. This initiative builds upon the foundations laid during the Italy-Algeria Business Forum in July 2025, which aimed to strengthen partnerships in agro-industry, energy, and infrastructure. The current mission represents a concrete step forward in Algeria's broader program for land development, especially in its southern regions, to meet pressing needs for modern equipment and advanced farming practices.
