Over 10 Million Psychotropic Tablets Intercepted by Algerian Police

Algerian security forces have successfully dismantled a major international drug trafficking network, seizing more than 10 million psychotropic tablets and 33 kilograms of cocaine. This significant operation, described as the largest of its kind undertaken by national security services, led to the arrest of 25 suspects involved in the illicit trade.

The extensive security operations, conducted across multiple provinces including Oran, Tizi Ouzou, Algiers, Blida, and Tipaza, resulted in the confiscation of precisely 10.4 million capsules of pregabalin and 33.4 kilograms of cocaine. Investigations revealed a criminal network comprising approximately 50 individuals, with 25 now in custody and others, including Algerian, Moroccan, and Dutch nationals, currently at large. Shipments were reportedly tracked from the southern regions of the country.

Further inquiries uncovered explicit international connections to Morocco, Dubai, and France, underscoring the transnational nature of the network. Authorities also reported the discovery of new and sophisticated concealment methods, including the use of a cement tanker to hide illicit substances, indicating evolving strategies by traffickers. Those apprehended face charges related to illicit import, transport, storage, and possession for sale of synthetic drugs and psychotropic substances within an organized transnational criminal group, serious smuggling affecting security and public health, and money laundering. They have been placed in temporary detention following judicial proceedings.

The National Office of the National Union of Private Pharmacists (SNAPO) commended the operation as an "important security achievement," praising the vigilance, professionalism, and efforts of security forces in combating illicit trafficking. The union emphasized the critical role these efforts play in safeguarding public health and maintaining societal security and stability. Other national bodies also lauded the comprehensive security response to this criminal activity.
