Fifteen Italian Firms Visit Algeria for Farm Modernization

A mission comprising 15 Italian agricultural technology companies is slated to visit Algiers on September 28 and 29. Organized by the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) in collaboration with Feder Unacoma, this initiative seeks to foster partnerships between Italian and Algerian public and private operators. The mission will specifically focus on agricultural technologies, aligning with ICE's efforts to promote agricultural mechanization and showcase business opportunities within the Algerian market.
The visiting companies specialize in five key areas crucial for modernizing agricultural production: machinery and equipment for agriculture and livestock, digitalization of farms, smart irrigation, fruit and horticultural nurseries, and storage solutions. The stated objective is to bridge Italian industrial expertise and technologies with the specific needs of local Algerian stakeholders. The program includes an opening workshop featuring institutional presentations, followed by B2B business meetings, and a day dedicated to visits to agricultural farms in the Algiers region. This visit marks a continued expansion of the Algerian-Italian partnership, which has progressively diversified beyond its traditional focus on hydrocarbons and Mediterranean energy security.
This initiative holds strategic importance for Algeria, where the agricultural sector accounts for approximately 15% of the national GDP and utilizes over 8.6 million hectares of usable agricultural land. In the face of water stress, climate variability, and a national push for greater food autonomy, the focus extends beyond merely expanding cultivated areas to include the rational intensification of production, enhancement of yields, and reduction of losses. Public authorities have set an objective to significantly increase production in priority sectors, particularly cereals, while improving water use efficiency, specifically aiming to double yields of strategic crops and contribute to the national plan for agricultural mechanization and digitalization.
Beyond direct equipment sales, the exchanges facilitated by this mission could pave the way for broader agreements encompassing representation, maintenance, technical training, spare parts supply, and even local assembly or production in partnership. For Algeria, the challenge and opportunity lie in integrating these advanced technologies into ongoing agricultural projects, carefully considering the unique climatic conditions of each region and the existing pressure on water resources. The deployment of these solutions, particularly smart irrigation and advanced storage systems, is vital for improving productivity per cubic meter of water and mitigating post-harvest losses, thereby supporting the expected modernization of the agricultural sector and bolstering food security.
