Adrar Welcomes Eighth International Saharan Tourism Festival

Adrar will host the 8th International Saharan Tourism Festival from November 12 to 14. This event aims to showcase and promote the tourism and cultural assets of Algeria's southern regions on an international scale. The festival underscores growing efforts to develop Saharan tourism, positioning it as a vital contributor to economic diversification and attracting increased numbers of domestic and international tourists.
Zouheir Maaouch, President of the Algerian Association for Tourism, Culture, and Sustainable Development, highlighted positive indicators in Algeria's Saharan tourism sector, signaling a strong commitment to expanding this activity. He noted that this direction is poised to elevate the southern regions' standing on both national and international tourism maps, especially given the rising interest in their natural, cultural, and heritage offerings. Maaouch also identified a growing interest from the Algerian diaspora abroad in national destinations, seeing their potential role in attracting tourists and promoting Algeria's diverse tourism landscape. The upcoming season presents an opportunity for travel agencies to innovate new programs for the South, appealing to both foreign and Algerian visitors increasingly keen on exploring their own country.
International events like the Adrar festival are crucial for presenting a modern image of the Algerian Sahara and publicizing its attributes globally. These platforms are envisioned as opportunities for promotion and networking, fostering new connections among sector stakeholders. Maaouch emphasized the need to transition from merely identifying potential to actively creating comprehensive tourism products, including organized trips, accommodation, transport, guides, and cultural activities that offer authentic experiences. This holistic approach, requiring coordination among tourism agencies, accommodation providers, guides, and artisans, will enhance the local tourism product's economic value.
Saharan tourism is also recognized for its significant role in local development by generating employment, encouraging investment, and stimulating sectors such as transport, hospitality, restaurants, and handicrafts, thereby creating direct economic benefits for the desert regions and their inhabitants. Algeria possesses the full spectrum of resources to become a world-class tourism destination, extending beyond regional competition due to its rich diversity encompassing desert, coast, mountains, heritage, culture, and renowned hospitality. The primary challenge lies in professionally organizing and marketing these assets, utilizing digital tools and social media to raise awareness of Saharan regions and transition from discussing potential to its effective, sustainable utilization year-round.
