Minister Attaf Engages UN, European Counterparts in New York

Minister Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, conducted a series of high-level meetings with United Nations officials and European foreign ministers in New York. These diplomatic engagements took place on the sidelines of his participation in the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations, developing cooperation with the European Union, and addressing various regional peace and security dossiers.

On September 21, 2026, Minister Attaf met with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations. Their discussions focused on developments in the Sahel-Saharan region and Algeria's role in supporting peace and stability there. The officials also reviewed the state and future of UN peacekeeping operations, addressing challenges and exploring ways to enhance their effectiveness, particularly in light of a comprehensive review aimed at adapting them to current transformations and securing necessary resources for their mandated tasks.

During his participation, Minister Attaf also engaged with several European counterparts. He met with Portuguese Minister Paulo Rangel, Danish Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Bulgarian Minister Velislava Petrova-Tchamova, Cypriot Minister Konstantinos Kombos, and Greek Minister George Gerapetritis. These meetings affirmed a shared commitment to strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation across diverse fields, including trade, infrastructure, renewable energy, water resource management, and maritime transport. Discussions also extensively covered enhancing cooperation between Algeria and the European Union, with particular emphasis on ensuring the balanced implementation of the partnership agreement and addressing obstacles affecting Algerian exports to the European market, thereby preserving mutual interests.
