Algerian Government Reviews Brine Valorization and Major Strategic Mining Projects

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb chaired a government meeting on Tuesday devoted to the valorization of brine produced by seawater desalination plants and the progress of Algeria’s major strategic mining projects.

According to the Prime Minister’s services, the government first heard a presentation on a project designed to recover and reuse the highly concentrated saline solution generated during seawater desalination operations.

In line with the directives of the President of the Republic to promote the circular economy, the project aims to reduce the environmental impact of brine discharges while transforming this by-product into a valuable industrial resource. The recovered brine could be used to produce different types of salts intended for several industrial applications.

Coordination work carried out with the relevant ministries, institutions and technical bodies has helped identify an appropriate technological process for brine valorization. The project also includes the establishment of a pilot facility at the Corso seawater desalination plant, which will test the selected technology and assess its potential for wider use at other desalination sites across the country.

The government also reviewed the implementation of Algeria’s major structural mining projects. These include the development of the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in Tindouf, the integrated phosphate project in Tebessa, and the Tala Hamza-Oued Amizour zinc and lead mine project in Bejaia.

During the meeting, officials presented the main stages already completed in the implementation of these strategic projects. Particular attention was given to the construction of industrial facilities, the installation of equipment and the preparation of supporting infrastructure.

The government also examined the measures taken to ensure that the mining sites receive sufficient water and energy supplies. These resources are considered essential for the launch, operation and long-term development of the projects.

The projects form part of Algeria’s efforts to diversify its economy, strengthen domestic industrial production, develop natural resources and reduce dependence on imports.
