AU Peace and Security Council Chaired by Algeria
Algeria spearheaded a significant annual consultative meeting between the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council and the Sub-Committee of Permanent Representatives on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance, along with the African Governance Architecture – African Peace and Security Architecture (AGA-APSA). Serving as the AU Peace and Security Council chair for August, Algeria facilitated discussions to evaluate progress in coordination among various AU organs and institutions. The meeting also provided a platform to exchange views on new trends and challenges in governance, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, peace, and security, while exploring coordinated African responses to the root causes of conflicts and instability.
Ambassador Mohamed Khalid, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the African Union, emphasized the importance of unifying efforts, avoiding redundant initiatives, and directing available resources toward joint action. He stressed the necessity of moving beyond theoretical commitments to practical measures, thereby enhancing the AU's capacity for crisis prevention and response to build a more stable, democratic, and prosperous Africa. The Ambassador underscored the interconnectedness of governance, democracy, human rights, peace, and security as integral pillars for achieving peace, stability, and sustainable development across the continent.
During the meeting, participants deliberated on strengthening the implementation of African legal instruments, particularly the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance. Member states that have not yet ratified these mechanisms were urged to complete their ratification procedures, ensuring the effective implementation of commitments and the submission of periodic reports. The discussions also focused on transitioning from annual coordination to practical and sustainable cooperation, identifying joint initiatives, and enhancing information exchange and unified analysis to support conflict prevention efforts. A key outcome was the agreement to adopt a "One African Union Approach" to foster synergy between governance and peace and security systems, thereby enhancing the AU's effectiveness in preventing conflicts and responding to challenges related to governance, human rights, and democracy. These consultations are particularly relevant as the Peace and Security Council is set to chair the AGA-APSA platform at both political and technical levels from 2026 to 2028.
