245,000 Tons of Urea Shipped from Algeria to India

Algeria successfully exported 245,000 tons of urea fertilizers to India during the second quarter of 2026, from April to June. This marks a significant development as Algeria had no deliveries to the Indian market in the same period a year prior, indicating a successful entry into a new and important Asian market.

According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, India imported 2.5 million tons of urea in the first quarter of its 2026/2027 fiscal year. Algeria emerged as a key supplier, ranking behind Egypt, which supplied 609,000 tons, and ahead of Nigeria, with 244,000 tons. Cumulatively, Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria contributed nearly 1.1 million tons of urea to the Indian market during this period, with these three African nations, alongside Georgia, accounting for 52% of India's total urea imports for the quarter.

India's increased imports from diverse sources, including Algeria, are occurring amidst disruptions to maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, which have prompted New Delhi to broaden its network of suppliers. Indian authorities had identified several African producers, including Algeria, as potential sources for agricultural campaign import diversification as early as March. Algeria's established fertilizer production capabilities enable it to meet a portion of India's demand, thereby expanding its international market reach.
