Spain Designates Algeria as Its Leading Natural Gas Provider for July
Spain has notably increased its reliance on Algerian natural gas, with Algeria becoming its primary supplier in July 2026. According to recent data from Enagás, the Spanish gas network operator, Algeria furnished Spain with 10,707 gigawatt-hours of natural gas during that month, constituting 41.7% of the nation's total imports. This positions Algeria ahead of the United States, which accounted for 11.6% of Spain's gas imports in July. Over the first seven months of 2026, Algeria supplied 74,336 gigawatt-hours, representing 34.8% of Spain's total gas imports, also surpassing the United States, which contributed 27.3% during the same period.
This strategic shift underscores Algeria's re-establishment as Spain's leading energy partner, following a period of competition. The majority of Algerian gas reaches Spain via the Medgaz subsea pipeline, directly connecting Beni Saf, Algeria, to Almería, Spain, without traversing Moroccan territory. This direct connection offers a significant strategic advantage, allowing Spain to receive gas more efficiently and at a lower cost compared to seaborne liquefied natural gas. Both Madrid and Algiers are currently exploring an increase in Medgaz pipeline capacity by approximately 10%, which would add around one billion cubic meters annually, further bolstering Spain's winter energy reserves and mitigating potential market disruptions.
The consistent rise in Algerian gas consumption by Spain, which saw an approximate 5% increase in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, highlights the enduring importance of this energy partnership. This trend reinforces Algeria's crucial role in ensuring Spain's energy security and solidifies its position as a key energy supplier in the European market. The renewed focus on Algerian supply reflects a strategic decision to secure a stable, proximate, and cost-effective energy source for Spain.
