African Union Mission Holds Sudan Peace Consultations

Algeria, currently holding the presidency of the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC), spearheaded a significant consultation mission to Khartoum, Sudan, on August 16 and 17. This initiative underscores the African Union's unwavering commitment to fostering peace, security, and stability in Sudan, aligning with resolutions adopted by the PSC concerning the Sudanese crisis.

During their visit, members of the PSC mission engaged in high-level consultations with key Sudanese authorities. These discussions included meetings with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, and Prime Minister Dr. Kamel Al-Tayeb Idris. Both Sudanese leaders commended the African Union's proactive role and Algeria's leadership within the PSC, expressing their appreciation for the mission's efforts to support a political process aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the nation.

Further broadening its scope, the mission also conducted consultative sessions with representatives from various political parties and civil society organizations. These dialogues aimed to gather diverse perspectives and thoroughly assess the evolving political, security, and humanitarian landscape in Sudan. Ambassador Mohamed Khaled, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the African Union and Chairman of the PSC, affirmed that the mission reflected the Council's dedication to supporting Sudan, restoring security, ensuring stability, and preserving the nation's unity and sovereignty. He also reiterated the AU's foundational principles, including respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, while rejecting any foreign intervention that could exacerbate the conflict.

The mission's comprehensive engagement provided direct and extensive insights into the situation, crucial for formulating an effective African approach to peace support in Sudan. Ambassador Khaled also welcomed the resumption of government activities in Khartoum and the preparations for reopening the African Union's office there, signaling a positive step towards potentially lifting Sudan's membership suspension from the continental body.
