African Energy Sovereignty Enhanced by Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, a strategic initiative connecting Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria, has reached an advanced stage, with technical teams reportedly commencing work on the Nigerien section. Farid Ghazi, the Algerian Secretary-General of the African Petroleum Producers' Organization (APPO), affirmed that the project is poised to enhance energy integration and connectivity across the African continent, signaling Africa's capacity to emerge as a reliable energy supplier. The pipeline is projected to become fully operational by early 2029.
Beyond its commercial implications, the TSGP holds significant cross-border importance by linking Nigeria's gas resources with Algeria's extensive energy infrastructure. This connection is anticipated to establish an additional route for gas supply to European markets while simultaneously strengthening energy interconnection networks within Africa. Mr. Ghazi underscored that the project's success would elevate Africa's standing in the global energy market and demonstrate its capability to develop collaborative energy ventures, commending Algeria's leadership in advancing joint African projects and its established reliability and expertise as an energy provider.
The broader vision for African energy independence also involves the activation of the African Energy Bank, an initiative supported by APPO to address financing obstacles for strategic energy projects across the continent. This bank is designed to offer independent funding, prioritizing trans-border initiatives that foster regional integration and empower African nations to mobilize internal financial resources, thereby reducing reliance on external funding sources. This approach supports an independent energy strategy for Africa, shifting focus from raw material exports to local value addition, which is expected to bolster economic and industrial development, create employment opportunities, and increase revenues within the continent.
