German Expertise Key to Algeria’s Green Hydrogen Ambition

Algeria is strategically repositioning itself from a gas exporter to a significant global hub for clean energies, with a particular focus on green hydrogen. This ambition involves a strategic partnership with German expertise to facilitate technology transfer and optimize Algeria's energy strategy. The nation is well-suited to achieve this goal, possessing exceptional solar and wind energy potential, substantial non-conventional water resources, extensive experience in the energy sector, robust transport infrastructure, and a favorable geographical proximity to European markets.

Key initiatives, such as the TaqatHy+ and SoutH2 corridor projects, highlight Algeria's commitment to becoming a leading supplier of green hydrogen to Europe. Economist Abdelkader Berriche emphasizes that this endeavor is not limited to exporting clean energy but extends to establishing a comprehensive industrial ecosystem within Algeria. This includes integrating research, innovation, engineering, specialized training, and technological industries, thereby solidifying Algeria's role in the decarbonized economy. Global economic developments also present opportunities for German companies seeking to bring production closer to European markets, positioning Algeria as a potential destination for industrial investments serving both European and African markets.

To convert these opportunities into concrete outcomes, the strategy emphasizes the creation of joint industrial projects and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. Algeria is encouraged to consider the German Mittelstand model, characterized by competitive intermediate-sized industrial companies. Furthermore, investing in human capital is considered a critical success factor, with German dual vocational training experience serving as a reference to strengthen ties between Algerian universities, training centers, and businesses. Joint programs across engineering, green technologies, digitalization, and green hydrogen are essential for deepening this cooperation, fostering a partnership grounded in knowledge, skills, and innovation for a lasting engagement in the new decarbonized economy.
