Italy Delegation to Discuss Agricultural Technology in Algiers

An Italian delegation comprising operators in agriculture and agricultural mechanization is scheduled to visit Algiers on September 28 and 29. Organized by the ICE agency, the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and Investment, in collaboration with FederUnacoma, a professional organization representing Italian manufacturers of agricultural equipment, this visit is a direct outcome of the Algero-Italian forum held in Italy in August 2025. That forum, co-chaired by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, established a foundation for new technological and agricultural cooperation missions between the two countries.

The entrepreneurial mission's scope encompasses various activities including machinery and facilities for agriculture, livestock farming, digitalization of agriculture, smart irrigation, arboriculture, market gardening, and storage solutions. The event in Algiers will feature an introductory workshop, institutional interventions from both Italian and Algerian representatives, and B2B meetings on the first day. A visit to an agricultural enterprise is planned for the second day, further facilitating practical engagement and partnership opportunities.

Algeria is currently undergoing a significant economic transformation, with agriculture positioned at the core of its food security strategy, contributing approximately 15% to the national GDP. The country boasts over 8.6 million hectares of usable agricultural land and a substantial land portfolio for investments, particularly in the Grand South, as exemplified by the Italian group BF operating a 37,000-hectare agricultural concession in Timimoun since 2024. Given that nearly 70% of Algeria’s agricultural activity still relies on traditional methods, there is an urgent need for modernization. The Algerian government's strategy to bolster strategic crops, such as cereals, actively encourages foreign investments, mechanization, and agricultural digitalization, identifying Italy as a key technological partner to promote advanced Italian technology and foster new business ventures.
