Malian Prime Minister Visits Algiers, President Goïta to Follow
Algeria and Mali are moving to normalize diplomatic relations, concluding a 14-month rupture. This significant development is highlighted by the recent visit of Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga to Algiers and the subsequent announcement that Malian transitional President Assimi Goïta has agreed to undertake an official visit to Algeria at a later determined date.
The diplomatic rupture, which lasted approximately 14 months, escalated following Mali's decision to terminate the 2015 Algiers peace and reconciliation agreement, further exacerbated by an incident where Algeria reported a Malian drone had violated its airspace. Signs of a thaw officially emerged on July 10, 2026, when both nations separately announced the return of their respective ambassadors and the reopening of airspace for flights between the two countries. During the period of strained relations, Algeria maintained an open discourse and refrained from exploiting Mali's challenging security situation, thereby conveying its commitment to regional stability without seeking to destabilize its neighbor.
Prime Minister Maïga's visit to Algeria on August 24, leading a high-level delegation, served as a crucial step in the reconciliation process. He was received by Government Head Seif Ghrib, Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf, and Energy Minister Mourad Adjal, before being granted an audience with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Maïga conveyed a written message from President Goïta expressing gratitude for President Tebboune's invitation, and crucially, confirmed President Goïta's agreement to an official visit to Algeria. Prime Minister Maïga emphasized that Algeria and Mali "share geography," echoing President Tebboune's view that the two countries cannot change their geographical reality, underscoring the imperative for cooperation.
Looking ahead, future collaboration between Algeria and Mali is expected to focus on several key areas, including economic cooperation, energy, and the completion of regional infrastructure projects such as the Trans-Saharan Road. Security and political matters related to northern Mali and the Azawad region are also prominent on the agenda. President Tebboune reaffirmed during Maïga's visit that Algeria would "never intervene in the internal affairs" of Mali, emphasizing mutual respect and sovereign decision-making in strengthening bilateral ties.
