Judo Gold Medal Awarded to Dris at Taranto Games

Messaoud Redouane Dris, an Algerian judoka, earned a gold medal in the less than 73 kg category on Friday during the first day of judo events at the Mediterranean Games 2026 in Taranto, Italy. This victory signifies Algeria's second gold medal in the current edition of the Games. Dris expressed pride following his triumph, stating his honor for Algeria and for raising the national flag.

Discussing his career ambitions, Dris indicated that this title represents a new beginning at the highest level, not merely a step in his athletic journey. He affirmed his commitment to continued diligent work in preparation for upcoming competitions, with a primary focus on the 2028 Olympic Games. The Algerian judo delegation at the Games comprises 14 athletes, including seven male and seven female judokas, with expectations for further medal contributions in the coming days.

This success by Messaoud Dris reinforces the positive momentum within Algerian judo and enhances the national participation record at these Games. With this latest gold medal, Algeria currently holds the 12th position in the provisional medal standings. The nation's total count stands at 17 medals, consisting of two gold, five silver, and ten bronze.
