Algiers – Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, emphasized today that the involvement of merchants, through the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans, in the ministry’s collaborative approach has delivered concrete results in various fields. This statement was released in an official communication from the ministry.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the ministry’s Secretary-General, Hadi Bakkir, during a ceremony marking the 68th anniversary of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution, Minister Zitouni praised the “engagement of the union’s current leadership in the participatory approach adopted by the ministry, which has resulted in significant on-the-ground achievements across multiple sectors.”

The minister emphasized that this “harmony between both parties” is contributing to strengthening Algeria’s national strategy for food security and advancing economic sovereignty.

On this occasion, Minister Zitouni called on the union’s leadership to “raise awareness among merchants, economic operators, and all productive forces about the need to keep pace with social changes and support economic reforms aimed at diversifying the economy. These reforms also seek to foster stronger, sustainable growth, invigorate the business community, increase private investment, boost export capacities, and continuously explore new opportunities and international markets.”

He further highlighted the substantial progress made by Algeria today, guided by the comprehensive strategic vision set by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This vision aims at improving the business environment, developing the investment climate, and strengthening wealth-generating and job-creating sectors, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups.

The minister noted that this strategy includes enhancing the economic fabric, aligning public authorities’ efforts to diversify and increase non-hydrocarbon exports, and integrating into global value chains.

In this context, Zitouni reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to “supporting merchants and economic operators while maintaining continuous communication with all productive forces to achieve sustainable development and economic growth.”

Reflecting on the 68th anniversary of the union’s founding, the minister commended the efforts of traders and artisans in supporting Algeria’s liberation struggle, recalling their establishment of this venerable union on September 13, 1956. He also praised their widespread uprising on January 28, 1957, in protest against colonial injustices, and their efforts in rejecting the myth of “French Algeria,” contributing to the internationalization of Algeria’s cause in global forums.

He concluded by acknowledging “the merchants’, artisans’, and workers’ unwavering commitment throughout all significant moments in Algeria’s history, as they have always been at the forefront in defending the nation’s interests, values, and principles.”
