Italy, Algeria Deepen Phosphate Industrial Cooperation

Algeria and Italy are strengthening their partnership through a large-scale integrated phosphate industrial project, which the Italian Ambassador to Algeria, Alessandra Schiavo, described as an initiative of significant scope. This renewed cooperation also sees the Italian company Saipem reinforce its long-standing presence in Algeria. The firm, which has operated in the country since its early post-independence years, intends to explore new opportunities, develop technologies, and deploy them with Algerian partners, marking a new phase in its commitment.

The project extends beyond industrial development, offering new perspectives for Algerian agriculture, employment, and national food security. Ambassador Schiavo highlighted that local fertilizer production is essential for enhancing agricultural yields and meeting domestic market needs, directly supporting food security and sovereignty. By developing a national sector, Algeria aims to better secure its supplies and mitigate exposure to international market fluctuations, thereby reducing its reliance on imports for a crucial resource.

This integrated phosphate project is positioned as a key lever for valorizing Algeria's natural resources and fostering an integrated industrial chain. The focus on developing phosphate exploitation, treatment, and fertilizer production will contribute to strengthening the nation's agricultural capacities. In a global context marked by supply chain disruptions and volatile raw material prices, controlling a portion of the fertilizer production chain is seen as a vital step towards consolidating Algeria's food sovereignty and overall economic resilience.
