India Receives Record 245,000 Tonnes Algerian Urea

Algeria achieved a notable milestone by exporting 245,000 tonnes of urea to India between April and June 2026, marking a new record for deliveries during the first quarter of India's fiscal year 2026-2027. This substantial volume surpassed Algeria's total urea exports to India for the entire preceding fiscal year, which stood at 217,059 tonnes, demonstrating approximately a 12.9% increase. This development positions Algeria as a significant and growing supplier of this strategic product to the Indian market.

India's Ministry of Commerce data, reported by the economic daily Mint, indicated these record figures. The larger trend sees India actively diversifying its fertilizer supply chains, influenced by logistical disruptions and rising transport costs on traditional maritime routes, as well as geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia. During the same period, India's total urea imports reached 2.5 million tonnes, with Algeria being a top contributor alongside Egypt, Nigeria, and Georgia, which collectively accounted for approximately 52% of these imports.

The consistent growth in Algerian urea exports underscores the product's increasing market share within India's colossal import demands. Urea, an essential input containing approximately 46% nitrogen, is critical for India's agricultural production. By expanding its portfolio of suppliers, New Delhi aims to enhance its food security and bolster the sustainability of its agricultural supply chains, highlighting Algeria's integral role in these efforts.
