Diverse Heritage Showcased at ‘Orientalys’ in Canada
Algeria registered a distinct cultural presence at the 16th 'Orientalys' festival in Montreal, Canada, held from August 13 to 16. This annual event transforms the city's old port into a vibrant space for music, arts, crafts, and traditions, bringing together cultures and communities globally. The "Mafatih" Association for Algerian Culture in Canada represented Algeria through an Algerian tent.
The Algerian tent captivated visitors from various nationalities by displaying diverse examples of traditional clothing, handicrafts, and culinary arts, alongside other elements that highlighted the richness and varied influences of Algerian culture. It served as a hub for cultural exchange and direct engagement with the Canadian public, offering visitors insight into daily life and Algerian heritage, and fostering a closer understanding of the national cultural identity. This participation also worked to reinforce cultural memory among the Algerian diaspora, particularly newer generations, solidifying their connection to their homeland's heritage, while presenting an intimate portrayal of Algeria to Canadian society.
Further enhancing Algeria's representation, the "Solaoun" troupe from Ghardaia performed at the festival. Their artistic presentations, inspired by the authentic heritage of Oued M'zab, blended traditional costumes, rhythms, local practices, and customs, illustrating the profound historical depth and richness of southern Algerian culture. Beyond artistic expression, the troupe's involvement also served a promotional and tourist purpose, introducing Ghardaia and the Algerian Sahara, highlighting its natural, heritage, and cultural offerings. The comprehensive Algerian participation, encompassing the tent and performances, provided a vivid illustration of the diverse national cultural heritage and its unified identity, emphasizing culture's role as an effective instrument for bolstering Algeria's international presence and promoting its cultural and tourist attractions.
