Agri-Tech Companies Visit Algeria for Modernization Deals

The Italian Foreign Trade Agency has announced that Italian companies specializing in agricultural mechanization and technology will visit Algeria on September 28 and 29. Organized in collaboration with the Union of Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers, the economic mission will include an institutional workshop, direct business meetings, and visits to agricultural institutions and farms within Algiers province. This initiative underscores Italy's interest in Algeria's strategic focus on achieving food security and advancing its agricultural sector.
The Algerian market is experiencing significant economic transformation, with agriculture contributing approximately 15 percent to the national GDP and utilizing over 8.6 million hectares of land. Recognizing that about 70 percent of agricultural activity still relies on traditional methods, Italian companies are keen to invest in technological modernization. The Italian Chamber has identified five key areas of interest: machinery and equipment for agriculture and livestock, agricultural digitalization, smart irrigation systems, vegetable and fruit nurseries, and storage technologies. The mission will also address specific Algerian market needs such as improved water management, enhanced crop yields, particularly for cereals, and strategies to counter climate change.
This visit comes at a time when Algeria has significantly elevated agricultural mechanization to a national policy since 2026, moving beyond simple equipment acquisition to an institutionally monitored and organized national strategy. This includes the establishment of a National Council for Agricultural Mechanization and the development of specialized cooperatives for equipment rental, aiming to broaden access to modern tools. The evolving Algerian market demand now extends beyond tractors and harvesters to integrate machinery with data, water management, services, maintenance, storage, and training—all sectors prioritized by the Italian Foreign Trade Agency. Bilateral trade figures highlight this growing partnership, with Italy's agricultural machinery exports to Algeria reaching nearly 35 million euros in 2024, a 34.9 percent increase from 2023, positioning Italy as the second-largest exporter in this field to Algeria.
The Algerian market holds substantial importance for Italian manufacturers, as Italy strategically seeks new foreign markets. Companies participating in the September visit aim to expand their presence in the Algerian market, focusing on equipment and digital solutions, building upon commitments made during the Algerian-Italian Business Forum held in Rome in July 2025. This broader collaboration encompasses energy, the circular economy, transport, infrastructure, agriculture, and advanced industries. Rome considers Algeria a priority market in its export development plan outside the European Union, with more than 150 Italian companies already operating in the country, and the Italian Embassy identifying agriculture, manufacturing, innovation, and infrastructure as key sectors for expanding bilateral cooperation.
