Public Works Minister Oversees National Infrastructure Modernization

Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure Abdelkader Djellaoui held a working meeting in Algiers on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, to reaffirm the priority accorded to significant national projects. The session, which brought together central executives and sector officials, focused on evaluating the progress of ongoing projects and establishing a stringent roadmap aimed at enhancing the country's connectivity and economic competitiveness across various sectors, including railways, the road network, ports, airports, and digitization.

During the meeting, the development of the national railway program was highlighted as a core governmental priority. Mr. Djellaoui instructed his teams to finalize all necessary provisions for the imminent launch of work on the strategic Laghouat – Ghardaïa – El Meniaa section, a project envisioned to open up southern regions and facilitate the transport of goods and passengers. Emphasis was placed on rigorous field monitoring to ensure strict adherence to execution timelines and technical standards. Similarly, the road and highway network is undergoing modernization of major structural axes, with priority given to areas identified as high-risk. The meeting also provided an update on the complementary development program for the wilayas of Djelfa and Tissemsilt, with a call to accelerate these infrastructure initiatives to ensure timely delivery and stimulate local economies.

To bolster foreign trade and passenger transport, the Ministry is accelerating the modernization of port and airport infrastructure. Ministerial directives underscored this commitment. Furthermore, a significant undertaking discussed was the digitization of sectoral management and the regularization of investment nomenclature at the wilaya directorates, signifying the sector's commitment to a comprehensive digital transition. Concluding the session, Minister Djellaoui reiterated that rigor, periodic monitoring, and respect for deadlines remain crucial pillars for realizing these foundational projects, which are vital for Algeria's socio-economic advancement.
