26 Works Selected for 8th Assia Djebar Novel Prize

Algiers has announced the longlist for the 2026 Grand Prix Assia Djebar for novels, an edition featuring 26 literary works. These selections, presented across Arabic, Amazigh, and French languages, highlight the vibrant landscape of Algerian fiction and contribute to the national recognition of its authors.

This eighth edition of the prestigious prize saw a significant number of submissions, with 155 novels received from 53 Algerian publishing houses. The longlist comprises 10 works in Arabic, 6 in Amazigh, and 10 in French. According to the jury president, Miloud Hakim, the selected novels explore a wide array of themes, including historical narratives, biographies, fantastical elements, and psychological and experimental approaches, reflecting the diverse creative experiences of participating novelists. The jury, chaired by Hakim Miloud, consists of ten members, including academics, novelists, and specialists in literature, translation, and sociology.

Established in 2015, the Grand Prix Assia Djebar is named in honor of the distinguished Algerian writer and academic Assia Djebar (1936-2015). The award aims to identify and celebrate the best new novels written in Algeria's national languages, thereby promoting Algerian literary creation both domestically and on the international stage. This initiative underscores Algeria's commitment to nurturing its cultural heritage and showcasing its literary talent.
