Ministry of Higher Education Sets September 2026 Academic Year Start

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has officially set the calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year, with classes for students scheduled to commence on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. This announcement provides clarity for Algerian students and faculty regarding the upcoming educational period. Prior to the student return, teacher-researchers are slated to begin their duties on Sunday, September 13, 2026, marking a phased resumption of activities.

This staggered return approach is designed to allow pedagogical teams to finalize timetables, allocate teaching loads, and ensure that all facilities are fully operational before the influx of students. The General Secretary of the Ministry has issued instructions to the presidents of regional university conferences, emphasizing the importance of completing all administrative procedures and material works. This proactive measure aims to guarantee that amphitheatres, laboratories, libraries, and practical work rooms are prepared to function efficiently from the very first day. Rectories are expected to utilize the summer period to address any outstanding issues identified during the previous academic year, reinforcing the commitment to a well-prepared learning environment.

The dates chosen for higher education closely align with the revised calendar for the school sector, where pupils are set to return on Monday, September 21, 2026, ensuring a synchronized start across different educational levels within a 24-hour interval. Furthermore, the ministry successfully conducted the definitive university registrations for new 2026 baccalaureate holders entirely online between August 5 and August 10. This fully digital process, utilizing the "zero paper" digitization strategy, allowed students to pay fees via the Edahabia card or QR code and retrieve virtual student cards on their smartphones, demonstrating Algeria's embrace of modern, efficient technological solutions in its education system.
