Niger and Algeria Begin Kaffra Sud-Est 1 Gas Exploration

Algeria and Niger have initiated exploratory drilling for the "Kaffra Sud-Est 1" well in Niger, a move highlighted by Algerian Prime Minister Seifi Ghrieb as a new step in the strategic partnership between the two nations. This project is designed to deepen the exploration of oil potential within the Kaffra field, setting the stage for subsequent development and production phases. The anticipated exploration results are expected to create new opportunities for Niger to leverage its natural resources and enhance its national hydrocarbon output.

The launch of this drilling operation follows the inauguration of a power plant in Niamey and aligns with the outcomes of the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Joint Grand Cooperation Committee, held in Niamey in March 2026. A significant logistical and technical undertaking involved mobilizing and transporting the 2000-horsepower "ENF-13" drilling rig from Algeria to the Kaffra site, successfully overcoming natural and field conditions, along with other logistical complexities. This multifaceted partnership, spearheaded by Sonatrach and Niger's national oil company, Sonidep, encompasses research, exploration, development, production, drilling services, refining, petrochemicals, and the distribution and marketing of petroleum products.

Algeria's commitment extends beyond the Kaffra project, aiming to establish an integrated and sustainable industrial partnership that covers the entire oil and gas value chain, from upstream to downstream, including the formation of joint ventures. Furthermore, Algeria will continue to support Sonidep in crude oil marketing, strengthen the expertise and negotiation capabilities of its personnel, and engage in major maintenance work for the Zinder refinery. The national exploration company, ENAFOR, is committed to progressively utilizing Nigerien businesses, products, and services, and to employing and training Nigerien youth for the Kaffra project. Prime Minister Ghrieb emphasized the importance of operational safety, environmental protection, work quality, and adherence to professional standards during implementation.

Prime Minister Ghrieb highlighted this model of cooperation as a fundamental element in building an African energy partnership, noting that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project is already in its implementation phases and represents a strategic axis for African integration. He also affirmed ongoing joint efforts between Algeria and Niger to execute bilateral projects and commitments across various sectors, including infrastructure, health, vocational training, higher education, digitalization, trade, transport, and finance. The presence in the Kaffra region, near the shared border, underscores a mutual vision to transform border areas into zones of cooperation and joint development, serving as a cornerstone for enhancing security and stability in the Sahel region.
