Algiers Expands Aid and Investment in Sahel Region
Algeria is strengthening its humanitarian diplomacy in African Sahel countries through varied humanitarian, logistical, economic, and financial assistance. This effort, according to Dr. Bouhania Goui, a political science and international relations lecturer at Ouargla University, is designed to ensure the security and stability of these nations, which represent Algeria's strategic depth. Dr. Goui indicated that this humanitarian relief diplomacy complements economic, security, and spiritual diplomacies, the latter often facilitated through the League of Scholars and Imams of Sahel African countries.
The comprehensive aid provided by Algeria aims to solidify bilateral relations and communication channels. Notable humanitarian initiatives led by Algeria include the cancellation of debts for 11 African nations, the provision of various relief operations, and the drilling of artesian wells to supply potable water to populations in arid and remote regions. Furthermore, Algeria has established and equipped schools, diverse humanitarian institutions, and mini medical centers to enhance social security and stability for Sahel residents, helping to alleviate their isolation and deprivation.
Bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Sahel countries such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso has seen positive advancements in the last six months, driven by the understanding that Algeria's security is intrinsically linked to that of its African neighbors. For instance, Niger has recently received military equipment, including four aircraft. Economically, Sonatrach International supervised an exploratory well in Niger's "Kafra" oil field, while Sonelgaz International contributed power generation stations. Significant ongoing strategic projects also include the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, connecting Nigeria through Niger to Algeria, and the commencement of Jet A1 aviation fuel exports from Adrar's refinery to Niger.
These initiatives reflect a growing developmental dynamism, positioning Algeria as a central hub in Africa. Algeria's strategic projects, such as the Algeria-Tamanrasset railway line, incorporate an African dimension, offering landlocked Sahel countries a cost-effective route to transport goods to European ports via Algeria. Collectively, these Algerian-sponsored projects and initiatives significantly contribute to building security and stability across neighboring African and Sahel regions, thereby enhancing overall regional security.
