NASA Scientist Finds Tassili n’Ajjer Resemblances on Mars

Noureddine Melikechi, an Algerian researcher based in the United States, working with NASA on the Mars program, identified a pertinent resemblance between Algeria's Tassili n'Ajjer region and specific areas on the planet Mars. As part of a scientific team contributing to Mars missions, including Curiosity and Perseverance, Melikechi's observations highlighted unique geological parallels that sparked a significant proposal within the scientific community.
Inspired by these similarities, Melikechi proposed naming parts of the Red Planet after Algerian natural parks. This initiative received favorable votes from his scientific colleagues. The selected names for these Martian regions include Tassili n'Ajjer in the Sahara, Djurdjura in Kabylie, and Ghoufi in the Aurès mountains, marking a unique connection between Algerian geography and planetary science.
Melikechi stated that this decision was a tribute to his home country, which provided his education, and to its natural parks. Beyond national recognition, the initiative also aims to draw global attention to the importance of natural parks in Algeria and worldwide, emphasizing their role as universal treasures that should be protected and preserved for future generations.
