Niger Hydrocarbon Project Progresses with Algerian Expertise

ENAFOR, a subsidiary of the Algerian group Sonatrach, has finalized preparations for the launch of drilling operations at the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploration well. Located in the Agadez region of northern Niger, approximately 85 kilometers from Algeria's southern border, this initiative marks the first such project undertaken by an Algerian company in the northern part of Niger. This promising undertaking is a direct outcome of a strategic partnership, with leaders from both nations emphasizing its importance for developing the hydrocarbon sector and enhancing bilateral cooperation in this vital domain.
Despite challenging climatic conditions, difficult terrain, and significant logistical hurdles, ENAFOR successfully transported all necessary drilling equipment, a workshop, and a fully equipped living base from Hassi Messaoud, over 2000 kilometers away, in record time. This logistical feat ensures that drilling operations, planned to reach a depth of 3,900 meters, can commence as scheduled. ENAFOR's extensive experience, evidenced by previous similar projects in the Sultanate of Oman, underscores its capabilities in this specialized field. Preliminary studies have indicated positive results, suggesting the project holds major importance due to anticipated productive outcomes.
Through this project, ENAFOR is set to transfer its valuable know-how to Nigerien counterparts, encompassing technology transfer and the training of hydrocarbon sector executives and workers in Niger. Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, previously highlighted the significance of the Kafra oil field project, noting that the Sonatrach group has long operated in this area with considerable and encouraging results. Niger's Minister of Petroleum, Hamadou Tini, has commended this key oil project, viewing it as a testament to the unprecedented and strategic level of relations between the two countries. This energy collaboration further builds on recent strategic projects, including a power plant constructed as an Algerian gift to Niger, and the ongoing implementation of agreements from the joint commission meeting held in Niamey.
