Snam Data Confirms Algeria as Italy’s Leading Gas Supplier

Recent financial and strategic reports from Snam, Italy's gas transmission network operator, confirm Algeria's sustained leadership as the primary natural gas supplier to the Italian market. Operational flow data highlights the continued importance of Algerian gas delivered via the TransMed (Enrico Mattei) pipeline, which connects Algeria to Italy through Tunisia. The Mazara del Vallo entry point in Sicily remains crucial for receiving these supplies, underscoring the TransMed pipeline's significant role in Italy's energy security and its capacity to re-route gas to other European markets.
The energy partnership between Algeria and Italy is evolving beyond natural gas, now encompassing the development of green hydrogen corridors into Europe. A key initiative is the SoutH2 Corridor, a project designed to link North Africa with Southern and Central Europe, extending through Italy and Austria to Germany. This project leverages existing gas infrastructure, repurposing parts of it for future hydrogen transport, which aims to reduce new network development costs and facilitate the delivery of green hydrogen produced in Algeria to European markets.
This forward-looking vision enhances Algeria's strategic importance, given its substantial solar energy potential and available land for renewable energy projects, alongside its extensive network of energy production, transport facilities, and infrastructure connecting to external markets. Concurrently, Italy aims to establish itself as a regional energy hub in Southern Europe, utilizing its geographical proximity to North Africa and its robust network to receive and redirect Algerian energy. The collaboration signifies a long-term energy system integrating natural gas, green hydrogen, and renewable energy, positioning Algeria as a vital source of low-carbon energy for Europe and Italy as its primary gateway.
