First National Mountain Tourism Day Launched in Tizi Ouzou

Algeria has inaugurated its first National Day of Mountain Tourism, with the inaugural event taking place in the Boghni – Tala Guilef region of Tizi Ouzou. The initiative, led by Minister Houria Meddahi, positions mountain tourism as a priority for the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts. This strategic move aims to highlight Algeria's rich natural and cultural heritage within its mountainous areas, with Tizi Ouzou selected due to its central location in the Djurdjura massif and its established tourism and cultural heritage.

The national day is designed to extend beyond mere tourist promotion, intending to generate substantial economic benefits for the regions involved. Key objectives include fostering job creation, enhancing the value of mountain villages and their unique heritage, and showcasing local traditions, customs, and hospitality. The ministry also seeks to empower rural and mountain families to capitalize on their territories' tourism potential, while attracting investments tailored to the specific geographical and environmental characteristics of these areas.

Integral to this strategy is the emphasis on digital marketing, encouraging the use of applications and online platforms to promote mountain destinations. Collaboration is envisioned with environmental associations, qualified tourist guides, youth organizations, specialized mountain tourism agencies, and startups. Furthermore, the plan encourages mountain-dwelling families to develop homestay accommodations for visitors, supporting the mountain economy and protecting traditional crafts. Efforts will also include promoting mountain sports like hiking and climbing, cave exploration, and reforestation campaigns, alongside the development of a guide for mountain sports and routes.
