National Festival, Digital Platform Expand Reading Across Algeria
The Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts has initiated a comprehensive program aimed at revitalizing the read book and expanding its reach among readers nationwide. This initiative encompasses a national festival for books, set to be held across all wilayas, alongside the creation of a dedicated digital platform. Bearing the slogan "Do not leave a book you loved imprisoned on the shelves, for a book has a life that does not end at the last page," the program seeks to provide used books with a renewed life cycle, transforming them into dynamic tools for communication and knowledge exchange.
The national festival will establish spaces throughout Algeria where readers and books can connect through exchanges, sales, and bartering. This approach is intended to broaden reading circles and facilitate access to various titles, including those that are rare or no longer in circulation through traditional channels. Complementing the festival, the "Algerian Read Book" digital platform will serve as an online framework for registration and participation, reflecting a strategic embrace of digital media to support cultural activities and enhance readers' access to book-related initiatives.
Beyond simply redistributing existing books, the initiative aims to cultivate a robust culture of sharing and circulation. It reinforces the idea that a book's function does not conclude with its initial owner, but can extend to successive readers, thereby continuing its intellectual and cultural role. This integrated approach, combining traditional cultural engagement with modern digital tools, creates a wider network for exchanging knowledge, titles, and reading experiences, enabling readers to recover long-sought old or rare titles and offering flexible solutions for book access beyond new purchases.
In anticipation of the digital platform's registration opening, the Ministry has encouraged readers to begin organizing their home libraries and selecting books ready to find new hands. This preparatory step underscores the initiative's fundamental goal: to maintain books in active circulation and continuously expand the practice of reading as each book transitions from one reader to another.
