Oran’s Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz Appoints First Female Rector

Anna Medeossi has made history with her appointment as the first female rector of a sanctuary globally, taking the helm at Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria. This significant development in a predominantly Muslim nation underscores Algeria's dedication to fostering cultural and religious openness, reflecting a positive image of tolerance and diversity on an international stage.

Medeossi, originally an architect, first arrived at Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in 2017 to oversee renovation efforts at the request of the then-Bishop of Oran. The sanctuary, which never previously had a rector, serves as a vital hub for interfaith dialogue, regularly welcoming hundreds of Muslim visitors, particularly on weekends and during summer. Its surrounding area, aptly named the Esplanade du vivre ensemble en paix, or "Esplanade of living together in peace," symbolizes the site's role in promoting peaceful coexistence. The sanctuary's imagery was globally recognized during the beatification of the Martyrs of Algeria, coinciding with the renovated site's inauguration.

The daily operations of the sanctuary further exemplify this spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. Medeossi engages local Muslim enterprises for maintenance work, and Algerian Muslim artists have been commissioned to create paintings depicting scenes from the life of Mary within the sanctuary. This active partnership, alongside the ongoing presence of the church and its Christian community in Algeria, is regarded as a powerful affirmation to the world of Algeria's identity as a nation committed to peace and tolerance. Mary herself is recognized as a pathway for dialogue, given her veneration within Muslim tradition, further enhancing the sanctuary's role as a meeting point where the beauty of the location aids in fostering dialogue and peace.
