Nigerien Premier, Tebboune Discuss Sahel Cooperation

Algeria has escalated its diplomatic outreach to member countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), reflecting an intensified commitment to regional stability. This renewed engagement was recently highlighted by the working visit of Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine to Algiers, which concluded on August 27, 2026. Following earlier discussions with Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga, the Nigerien leader met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune after comprehensive talks with his Algerian counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb. During these meetings, Prime Minister Zeine affirmed Algeria's standing as a “neighbor and brother country,” signifying a positive shift in diplomatic relations.

The high-level diplomatic exchanges underscore a shared commitment to re-establishing a direct strategic partnership between Algeria and its Sahelian neighbors. Central to these discussions were initiatives to enhance the security of common borders and collaborative efforts to combat cross-border criminality. Additionally, the talks focused on revitalizing bilateral investments, building upon existing projects such as the operational power plant in Niamey and the ongoing oil exploration venture in the Kafra block.

Beyond immediate security concerns, the concerted efforts between Algiers, Niamey, and Bamako are designed to accelerate the implementation of major continental infrastructure networks. Key projects receiving renewed impetus include the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) and the fiber optic backbone, which aims to connect North Africa with West Africa. These initiatives are complemented by efforts to boost socio-economic development in border regions through increased energy assistance and supply programs, thereby strengthening the resilience of remote rural communities. The diplomatic warming is further preparing for an official visit by Malian Transitional President General Assimi Goïta to Algiers, intended to finalize the normalization of bilateral relations.
