The recent sighting of a new Russian Il-78MK-90A aerial refueling aircraft, noted for its unusual tail number and absence of standard Russian identification markings, has generated speculation regarding its potential acquisition by a foreign customer, with Algeria identified as a prominent candidate. For decades, Algeria has maintained close military-technical relations with Moscow, establishing itself as a major military customer.

Should reports of Algeria previously signing a contract for new Il-78 aircraft be confirmed, the North African nation would emerge as a highly logical recipient for the advanced Il-78MK-90A. This new variant, derived from the Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft, is designed to refuel combat aircraft mid-air, significantly extending their range and mission endurance.
