Mining and Geology Mega-Project Advances Algerian-Russian Ties

Russia and Algeria are advancing a significant bilateral "mega-project" in the mining and geology sector, focusing on developing a medium-term roadmap for geology and subsoil exploitation in Algeria. This initiative aims to transform Algeria's national mining industry by leveraging Russian technical expertise and exploring strategic deposits across the country.

The framework for this alliance was detailed by Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology, Alexandre Kozlov, ahead of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Following a working group meeting in late June, both nations established a comprehensive strategy. Algeria possesses substantial geological potential, including significant reserves of uranium, copper, and manganese. Russian companies intend to apply their historical expertise, spanning from initial prospecting to deposit evaluation, to accelerate the industrial development of these resources.

This large-scale project directly follows President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's state visit to Moscow in June. Discussions during the summit with President Vladimir Putin culminated in the signing of a declaration of deep strategic partnership, signaling a "new, more advanced stage" in bilateral relations. By expanding cooperation into the mining sector and including the training of local experts, Algeria and Russia affirm their shared ambition to broaden their alliance into key and highly strategic economic domains for decades to come.
