Angolan President João Lourenço visited the ‘Fouka 2’ seawater desalination plant in Tipaza province on Tuesday, as part of his ongoing state visit to Algeria.
The tour, conducted in the presence of Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Water Resources Ounas Bouzegza, and Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi, showcased the facility — built entirely through national expertise and Algerian companies.
Daoudi told dzwatch that Algeria has become Africa’s top producer of desalinated water, second in the Arab world, and second across the Mediterranean. He added that production capacity will rise from 3.7 million m³/day to 5.6 million m³/day by 2030.
Algeria has also launched a new national program in 2025 to build six additional desalination plants along its coastline, adding 1.8 million m³/day in future capacity. The Fouka 2 plant, inaugurated by President Tebboune in February 2025, produces 300,000 m³ daily.
