Algeria’s red tuna fishing campaign for the current season will officially launch next Tuesday, dzwatch has learned exclusively from Amar Ouchelli, Director of Marine Fisheries Development at the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture under the Ministry of Agriculture.
A fleet of 41 vessels has been mobilized for the operation, including seven locally manufactured boats, underlining Algeria’s growing industrial capabilities in the maritime sector.
Ouchelli told dzwatch that Algeria’s national quota for red tuna this season — running through July — has reached 2,465.28 tonnes, marking an increase of over 400 tonnes compared to 2025 projections.
A dedicated portion of the national quota has been allocated to small-scale coastal fishermen to support local market supply and boost their livelihoods. This initiative follows the approval of Algeria’s red tuna fishing plan by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and a revised ministerial decree governing fishing conditions.
