African Peace and Security Council Praises Algeria’s Leadership in UN Resolution on World Day of Living in Peace

The African Peace and Security Council on Thursday commended Algeria’s pioneering role in the adoption of the United Nations resolution establishing the World Day of Living in Peace, observed annually on May 16.

In an exclusive statement obtained by dzwatch, the Council praised Algeria’s leadership in securing the UN resolution, citing the country’s national experience in combating terrorism and violent extremism.

The Council called on African members of the UN Security Council (A3) to organize annual events at the UN to highlight Africa’s experience in peacebuilding and coexistence.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Agenda 2063, while expressing deep concern over rising security challenges including terrorism, hate speech, and disinformation across the continent.

The Council urged strengthened coordination within African Union peace mechanisms and called for addressing root causes of conflict, respecting sovereignty, and upholding peoples’ right to self-determination.

It is worth noting that on December 8, 2017, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 72/130, on Algeria’s initiative, declaring May 16 the World Day of Living in Peace.
