Electricity Demand in Algeria Sets New 21,650 MW Record

Algeria's national electricity network successfully accommodated an unprecedented demand peak of 21,650 megawatts (MW) on Monday, August 17, 2026. This historic figure, driven by an exceptional heatwave and increased humidity levels, represents the highest electricity demand ever recorded in the country's history. The new peak notably surpassed the previous record established on July 13, which stood at 21,378 MW, and also exceeded the 21,176 MW recorded on July 12.

The recent achievement marks the third consecutive record peak for electricity demand in 2026, reflecting a sustained upward trend in the nation's energy consumption over recent years. Demand peaks have steadily climbed from 16,666 MW in 2022 to 18,476 MW in 2023, 19,543 MW in 2024, and 20,628 MW in 2025. The current 21,650 MW peak signifies an increase of approximately 30% compared to 2022 levels, illustrating the significant expansion in the country's electricity requirements and the grid's robust capacity to meet this growing need.

The Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies attributed the record demand to the widespread use of cooling appliances by households, public, and private institutions during peak hours, primarily between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM local time. While natural gas currently remains the predominant source for electricity generation in Algeria, contributing 98.6% of the national mix in 2024, plans are underway to enhance the contribution of clean energy sources, particularly solar power, with new projects anticipated to come online in the near future. This strategic direction aims to support the continued growth in domestic demand, which saw electricity generation rise to 96.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024 from 95.84 TWh in 2023.
