Rachida Brakni Explores Algerian Identity in New Novel

Rachida Brakni, a renowned novelist, director, and actress, has released her latest novel, 'La Part absente.' The new work offers a sensitive exploration of Algerian identity and the enduring legacy of French colonization, contributing to Algeria's rich cultural narrative.

In 'La Part absente,' Brakni delves into the intricate personal histories shaped by colonial experience. The fiction follows Karina Leroy, a Parisian gallerist, who confronts the painful past of her Algerian mother during the period of colonization. Through this narrative, the novel finely questions notions of integration and feelings of betrayal, serving as a powerful testimony to the legacy of the Algerian War.

This intimate literary endeavor continues Brakni's previous thematic explorations. Her earlier novel, 'Kaddour,' published in 2024, paid homage to the life of her father, an Algerian emigrant. As a former resident of the Comédie-Française, Brakni's transition to fiction maintains a personal and profound approach, further enriching the discourse surrounding Algerian heritage and national memory.
