Environment Ministry Develops Climate Early Warning System

The Algerian Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life, in collaboration with the High Commission for Digitalization (HCN), is developing a national digital platform for early warning and monitoring of climate change. Minister Kaoutar Krikou announced this initiative in Algiers, highlighting its importance in a context marked by intensifying climate change impacts across Mediterranean basin countries, including Algeria. This national project is designed to strengthen Algeria's capabilities in tracking and forecasting climate and environmental risks, shifting the national approach from post-disaster intervention to one centered on anticipation and prevention.
The intelligent alert system collects and processes climate and environmental data from various sectors, providing a precise overview of potential risks. It classifies alerts based on their severity and transmits them promptly to relevant authorities, enabling preventive measures before situations escalate. This platform complements broader national efforts in combating climate change, which include a national adaptation plan focused on resilience building, accelerating the transition to a green and low-carbon economy, enhancing climate action financing, facilitating technology transfer, and strengthening national capacities.
These initiatives align with Algeria's commitment to international climate action, as evidenced by a recent training day organized in preparation for the country's participation in the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP31) in Antalya, Turkey. During this event, the role of security bodies, such as the National Gendarmerie Command and the General Directorate of National Security, in safeguarding national natural resources was emphasized. Furthermore, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Algeria, Savina Claudia Ammassari, acknowledged Algeria's progress in seawater desalination for sustainable water availability and recognized the contribution of emerging startups in developing innovative solutions for climate phenomena.
